Equipping students with a molecular-level understanding of life processes and their clinical applications — the biochemical foundation every future diagnosis rests on.

The Department of Biochemistry sits within PESIMSR's Pre-Clinical stage, alongside Anatomy and Physiology. Students learn the molecular structure, function and inter-relationship of biomolecules, then build toward using that knowledge to diagnose real clinical problems.

Teaching Objectives

What students are expected to master at each stage of training in this department.

  1. Understand the molecular structure, function and inter-relationship of biomolecules, and the consequences of deviation from normal.
  2. Describe the digestion and assimilation of nutrients, and the consequences of malnutrition and its diagnosis.
  3. Integrate the various aspects of metabolism and their associated imbalances.
  4. Understand the mechanisms involved in maintenance of — and abnormalities in — acid-base, fluid and electrolyte homeostasis.
  5. Outline the molecular mechanisms of gene expression and its regulation, along with the principles of molecular techniques and their application.
  6. Analyze clinical biochemistry data and use it in diagnosing disease.
  1. Develop skill in performing recent investigations and procedures for patients, and in documentation of records.
  2. Critically analyze relevant published literature in order to practice evidence-based biochemistry.
  3. Function as a productive member of a team engaged in health-care research and education.
  4. Adopt good laboratory practices, developing skill in producing accurate, timely and cost-effective diagnostic services for patients.
  1. Maintain high standards of practice through sound judgment in establishing, performing and evaluating laboratory tests.
  2. Ensure total customer satisfaction by providing customized, cost-effective, accurate and timely diagnostic services.
  3. Familiarize with, and adhere to, established organizational policies and procedures.
  4. Continuously improve laboratory performance by monitoring proficiency-testing results, upgrading skills through CME programs, and undergoing second- and third-party audits and benchmarking.
