Teaching Objectives
What students are expected to master at each stage of training in this department.
- List common infectious diseases and their etiopathogenesis.
- Describe the mechanism of immunity to infections.
- Collect appropriate clinical samples and transport them promptly to the laboratory.
- Decide the suitable antimicrobial agent for treatment, and apply the scope of immunotherapy and available vaccines.
- Apply disinfection, sterilization and biomedical-waste-disposal methods to control hospital and community-acquired infection.
- Plan and interpret laboratory investigations for diagnosis, correlating clinical manifestations with etiological agents.
- Perform common bedside tests — blood films for malaria and filaria, Gram staining, Acid Fast staining, and stool exams for ova and cysts.
- Follow standard precautions during health-care activities, and identify and report notifiable diseases to public-health authorities.
- Undertake teaching assignments in Microbiology.
- Establish diagnostic microbiology laboratory facilities.
- Perform surveillance of hospital-acquired infections and contribute to infection-control and antibiotic-stewardship guidelines.
- Investigate outbreaks within the hospital and formulate preventive guidelines.
- Conduct research across branches of medicine involving microbiological work.
