Pediatrics prepares students to care for patients across an entire childhood — recognising that a newborn, a toddler and an adolescent each need a different clinical lens, and that families are as much a part of treatment as the patient.

Goal
To train undergraduates who are competent in the practice of pediatrics, by identifying common childhood problems and how to present them.
Objectives
- Provide excellent clinical experience in managing pediatric patients of all ages across a broad spectrum of illness.
- Train undergraduates in the immediate recognition and treatment of common pediatric illness, as well as life-threatening emergencies.
- Facilitate good working relationships with colleagues and consultants.
- Provide opportunities to acquire skills in oral presentation, medical writing and research design.
- Complete a one-month rotatory internship with defined learning objectives, resources and evaluation.
- Communicate effectively with children and their families.
Goals
- Provide educational experiences across the diversified field of pediatrics in an intellectual environment conducive to learning.
- Balance structured educational activities — didactic lectures — with clinical learning and patient-care responsibilities.
- Help residents develop interpersonal skills and participate in ethical decision-making.
- Work with the full health-care team — social service, child life, physical and respiratory therapy, psychology and nutrition.
Objectives
- Gather essential and accurate patient information via medical interviewing, physical examination, diagnostic studies and developmental assessment.
- Make informed diagnostic and therapeutic decisions using current evidence and clinical judgment, referring appropriately when needed.
- Develop and carry out patient-care management plans, and perform all medical procedures essential to the scope of practice.
- Counsel patients and families to maintain health and prevent disease, encouraging active participation.
- Use information technology to optimize patient care, and demonstrate ethical, diversity-sensitive professional conduct.
- Promote resident teaching activity, including undergraduate teaching and clinical training skills.
